Inspiration is everywhere. Matisse was inspired by an octagonal chair—its low seat and wide back encouraged a relaxed pose that opened up the body’s forms, providing the artist with new ways to study his models. In “Odalisque on a Turkish Chair” (1928, Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris), patterns on the chair’s surface seem to have migrated to the wall.
